Winter 2011 (Jan - March, Semester 1/4 for the year.)

Two-Figure for this semester was cancelled, so I swapped to doing Chris's Bas Relief class for a change. I'm also taking an intro to painting the human figure class with Bernard Collins.

Bas Relief

Day one: Chris explained the theory behind bas relief, and had the class do a series of 20-minute "sketches" in clay. Set it up, do what you can, then wipe it clean when the model finished her pose, and start on the next one when she takes a new pose. Pose 1, Pose 2, Pose 3, Pose 4, Pose 5.

Figure Painting

January 12: This turned out to be intended as an oil-painting class, a medium I have never worked with. I didn't even have the right supplies, but I brought watercolors and a limited acrylic palet. We're supposed to have each model for two days. Watercolor & Acrylic.
January 19: ...Somebody ganked my easel, and there was no place to get a similar view of the model to match my day one view. So I picked a new spot, and decided to actually *try* my hand at oils. Which...wasn't such a great attempt, in part because I was trying to treat it like it was watercolor, and that...doesn't work so well. Frustrated, I took a break and sketched the model in just charcoal for about twenty, thirty minutes. The Attempt at Oil and the Charcoal Sketch.

Fall 2010 (Oct - Nov, Semester 4/4 for the year.)

Again, only taking one class...and only the second half of it, for that matter. One pose for five weeks. Pair 4. My plan had been to devote the rest of the time that I would usually be taking class to finishing up the dozen or so sculptures that have been sitting in my studio since I started taking classes at Fleisher, but alas, very little work was done towards this goal.

Summer 2010 (July-Aug, Semester 3/4 for the year.)

I only had one clay-sculpting class this summer, and that class only had one pose.

Pair 3

I also had a 2-day workshop in direct plaster, in which I did a sized-up copy of an old sculpture of mine...and a very large ear.

"Stretching Lady" double-sized in Plaster...............................Big Ear

Spring 2010 (April - June, Semester 2/4 for the year.)

Figures 1 through 4 above are my Tuesday evening class with Cathy Hopkins; the first pose/model was only for one night, the second for two nights, the third for three and the fourth figure for four. I decided to document my progress each night for each sculpture. (As usual, I don't consider any of these finished yet; they're all in my studio waiting to be cast. So eventually there ought to be a "final" image for each figure. Probably some time next year.)

Wednesday nights- Chris Smith's class - is a different set up this semester; we get to work with one pair of models for five weeks, and then another pair for another five weeks. Again, I tried to do a nightly documention of my progress. Pair 1 was interesting, since the female model for the first night got an out of town job and left, the female for the second night decided she didn't like the pose and walked out after the first 20 minutes, and the woman who posed for nights three and four just didn't show up the fifth night, and the model who filled had a completely different body type than any of the others we'd been working with. Pair 2 I am attempting to sculpt at, shall we say, considerably LARGER than my recent average for full-sized figures.

I am also in a figure drawing class Tuesday afternoons this session, with Bernard Collins for a teacher.

April 13: A collection of 1-minute, 2-minute, and 5-minute Gesture Sketches. Set 1 and Set 2.
April 20: 5-minute and 10-minute studies, of a model and then a skeleton posed in the same fashion.
April 27: Our model never showed up, so we divided into pairs with each person drawing a portrait of the other.
...............And then the girl I was paired with left, so I drew the woman sitting next to her for the last 10 minutes of class.
May 04: I didn't document the images on this day, I'll have to go back and photograph them later.
May 11: I was sick and missed class.
May 18: The first half of the class was taken up by a critique. Then we had two 25-minute poses and one 15-minute pose
..............of a woman holding a violin- now working chiaroscuro (focusing on darkness and light) instead of line drawings.
May 25: A series of 20-minute chiaroscuro poses. And yes, often our teacher has the model take the same pose facing
.............the opposite direction. Set 1 and Set 2.

PAGE IN PROGRESS: I am trying to figure out what sculptures came from what classes prior to this point, since I wasn't doing clear documentation back then. Nearly all the figures are still works in progress. Or at least, unfinished works sitting in my studio waiting for me to come make more progress on them.

Winter 2010 (January - March, Semester 1/4 for the year.) Fleisher swapped its yearly schedule around, giving us four shorter (10-week regular, 6-week summer) semesters instead of three (15-week regular, 8-week summer) longer ones. They also changed things up so that each semester, one of the sculpure teacher's classes is now a paid workshop instead of a free class.
I was in Cathy's Tuesday sculpture class, but Chris was doing a bas relief workshop I didn't want to take, so I took David Berger's observation drawing class instead on Wednesday nights. This would be the first Fleisher drawing class I had taken. The first half of the class was devoted to objects and still lives; the last two or three were with live models.

There were three poses done in Cathy's class this semester: Figure 1 was on the armature from Chris's winter armature workshop (which is missing), Figure 2 was Jessica (who I missed two of the three days and so had her over to my studio to work on the piece), and Figure 3 was Rory, standing with her legs crossed and one arm extended, on the crazy jury-rigged armature.

Fall 2009 (September - November, Semester 3/3 for the year.) : The Sunbather was from Chris's class, which is showing up as the only class I was signed up for that semester. I'm not 100% sure what the other figure from this session was, but there *probably* would have been only one more due to the poses from his classes lasting a longer time, 5-7 weeks for each pose.

August 2009 - This is when I moved from East Falls to University City. So any pictures taken of sculptures in the basement of the East Falls house obviously occurred prior to this point. Aka, the classes listed below.

Summer 2009 (June- July, Semester 2/3 for the year.): I took two classes with Chris Smith; Intro to form, which is where the The fruit, bone, and shells still-life, and the hand study resting on the skeletal arm studies are from, and then the first Two-Figure class, from which Dialogue was the sole result.

Spring 2009 (Starting February 4th, Semester 1/3 for the year.) This was a session I joined Chris's class halfway through the semester, which is why I only have the one figure to show for it: Lounging Male with Jug - View 1, View 2. I was also signed up for Cathy's class this semester. 90% chance that Wading Male and Wading Female are from this class. And the Wax Woman. And probably the other drawing.

Fall 2008 - (Starting September 16th, Semester 3/3 for the year.) - I was only signed up for Cathy's class this semester. I think both Armless Atlas and Hipshot Lady might be from this class. Also one of the drawings.

Summer 2008 - (Starting June 10th, Semester 2/3 for the year.) - I had two classes, my first with both Joni Woods and Chris Smith; Cathy wasn't teaching a summer session. From Joni's Sculptural Forms came practice with 1-to-1 ratios: The eyes from the pieta and the green pepper. I missed the fabric folds practice, but was there for the animal modeing section, which is when the lost cat sculpture was made. Chris's "Modeling Form" class ought to have been two sculptures, the first one reclining and the second one standing. Reclining Woman 01 was the first; I am not sure which the second was.

Spring 2008 (Starting February 05th, Semester 1/3 for the year.) - I only had one class, Cathy Hopkin's sculpture, this semester. Standing Male (2008-05-06) and Standing Female (2008-07-29) both came from this class since the photos of them are date-stamped from around this time.

Fall 2007 (Starting September 18th) - This was my first time at Fleisher, and I entered Cathy Hopkin's class several weeks into the semester. This was the last class set for 2007; this was before Fleisher changed its schedule around to add an additional (Winter) term into the year. I *think* the Seated Lady was the first piece that came from this class, as it was before I started using an armature. It may have been my only piece for this class.
